3 Killed including the top JeM commander in J&K’s Kishtwar gunfight

On Sunday, nearly 35 days after Operation Trashi-I in Jammu-and-Kashmir’s Kishtwar District was launched, three terrorists from the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad were killed during an encounter with local security forces.

The bodies of the terrorists were so badly charred that they could not be recognized after the mud-house where they were hiding caught on fire during the firefight, officials stated. Security agencies have made preliminary assessments that suggest one of the dead could be Saifullah. He was a JeM leader. There was no official confirmation.

Saifullah reportedly entered J&K five years ago, and remained active ever since. He is accused of being the mastermind behind several deadly attacks against security forces including the July 2024 attack that killed four soldiers. Around 11 am, intelligence agencies received information that terrorists were hiding in a dhok on a hill near the Passerkut district of Chhatru. The Army, Special Operations Group of J&K Police (SOG), and the CRPF teams reached the site and laid a cordon. The terrorists fired as security forces closed on them, leading to an encounter. Three AK47 rifles with ammunition were found at the site. The shelter was reportedly used during seasonal migration by nomad tribes.

The site was initially found to have two charred corpses, but a third body was later discovered. Advertisement According to a Nagrota-based White Knight Corps statement, the operation Trashi-I was launched by the Nagrota-based White Knight Corps based on intelligence collected from J&K Police and Intelligence Bureau, as well as its own sources. The joint operation aimed at tracking and neutralising terrorists in the Kishtwar area. Troops of Counter Insurgency Force Delta (CIF Delta), White Knight Corps in coordination with J&K Police, CRPF and other agencies, engaged terrorists again on Sunday, and neutralised three militants successfully, according to the statement.

The General Officer Commanding in Chief of Northern Command Lt Gen Pratik Singh commended the White Knight Corps’ quick and precise actions in Kishtwar. Operation Trashi-I began on 18 January in the Son Nar region of Chhatru after initial reports of the presence of terrorists. On the first day, one soldier was killed. A terrorist belonging to the group was neutralised on February 4. Four terrorists associated with the group were eliminated in Sunday’s operation. In the Chhatru area, six gunfights have occurred in the last 35 days. After the initial setback security forces intensified their operations with caution. The terrorists’ hideouts and kitchens were busted earlier. Large quantities of food were found.
